Winter Work Wear

Because the majority of my readers live in climate where the winter's are long and fierce, I'm providing a few easy tips on how to stay warm at the office while still looking stylish and professional.

1 - Plain and simple, wear a sweater. There are so many over-sized sweaters and cardigans out there that look great with slim fitting pants or leggings. One fad that I am really into right now is the aztek sweater. These geometric patterned flowy cardigans look great as is or cinched at the waist with a belt.

2 - Throw on a scarf. A scarf is not only a great accessory in winter but will also keep you toasty warm at work on those cool days when the a/c decides to blare instead of the heat. Does this happen at anyone else's office? There are also so many different colour's and style's of scarves out there which makes matching to outfits effortless.

3 - Insulated booties, aka boots with the fur. Invest in a couple of pairs of warm, lined boots. The shoe stores are swarming with many different types, styles and materials.

4 -Space heater. I know this is not fashion related but my space heater at work has been a godsend! These tiny little miracle boxes are fairly reasonable in price and last quite a long time.

Casual Style Inspirations

There are a handful of ladies out there whose style always leaves me impressed. I'm not talking about their glam, red carpet looks either. Instead, these ladies' casual day to day looks are the ones that I am dying to emulate!

Kate Beckinsale definitely knows how to rock some casual ripped jeans. Do I even have to mention that her hair is always perfect too?

Leather pants and fur vests may not be what you and I consider to be 'casual' but for rich, over privileged socialites like Olivia Palermo, this is as casual as it gets.

Red leather pants on an airplane? Why not. Ashley Tisdale can pull it off.

Suit Separates

It's always a good idea to invest in a nice suit, especially if your field of work is business. You will most likely be faced with several occasions in your career where a suit is the appropriate attire. I normally choose to wear a suit for interviews (whether I am the interviewer or interviewee), during presentations or if attending events with higher executives, to name just a few.

Unfortunately, there may be periods of time where these types of events are few and far between, causing your suit to collect dust hanging in your closet. If you're anything like me and like to get as much wear out of all items in your closet as possible, then this would bother you.  Well guess what, there is a solution! It's okay to wear suit pieces separately as business casual outfits.  This can be accomplished quite easily as suits are usually purchased in neutral colours such as black, navy and grey which makes colour co-ordinating a breeze.

There really are no set rules to this. I just have a few suggestions.

Suit Jacket
-Try to stay away from pairing the jacket with pants in the same or similar hue.
-Skinny pants or leggings look best with a suit jacket.
-Rolling up the jacket sleeves will make the outfit look more casual and trendy.

Suit Pants
-Again, I highly recommend a pop of colour on top.
-Choose a blouse or cardigan instead of another blazer.

CMB Workplace Uniform Challenge - From Tiresome to Trendy

The Challenge: Take an ordinary Flight Centre uniform and transform it into a fashionable work outfit.

The Goods On Hand:
Navy short sleeved ruched top;
White 3/4 sleeve white collared shirt;
Navy blazer;
Navy pants;
Navy pencil skirt;
Navy short sleeved sheath dress;
Black belt;
Men's tie

The Rules: Retail staff/Corporate Traveller and Head Office Support must wear the uniform. Black shoes are generally required.

The End Result: By bending the rules juuuuuust a little, I was able to put together 4 different stylish looks with the pieces mentioned above.

Look # 1 - The Flight Attendant (when I put on this outfit I felt like I was jetting off somewhere)
Although the tie is normally worn by the guys, I figured the ladies of Flight Centre could make it look just as great. Layering your navy short sleeved ruched top over the 3/4 sleeved collared shirt is a great pairing with your white cotton shirt.  Use your tee as an alternative to the knit Flight Centre vest if you don't have one or want a different look. Cinch your waist with a skinny belt, I went with a blue braided belt (non-uniform) and complete the look with some grey tights and classic black pumps.

Look #2 - Dress to Impress
Short sleeved sheath dress and 3/4 sleeved collared shirt combo. Add your own skinny belt or use the Flight Centre one to give some shape to the boxy dress.  Throw on a statement necklace.  Great if you're at a desk all day, if clients only see the top half you might as well make it interesting.  I chose seed pearl and gold chain piece for Yvonne.

For you fashion forward Flighties (I've heard you're quite the stylish bunch) try textured tights to make your outfit pop.  Keep them neutral if they're a louder pattern and leave the fishnets at home.

Look #3 - Wear The Pants At The Office
Spicing up the Navy pants was probably the most challenging so I kept the styling simple and classic.

On top: Tee and Cotton top from Look #1.This time around, I combined the blue and grey belts together and added some interest with darker beaded bracelets.

Look #4 - Short Skirt, Long Jacket
From what I hear the Flight Centre/Corporate Traveller blazer might not be a favorite piece but great if you want that extra bit of professionalism or even if it's cold day and all your FC sweaters are in the laundry!

Roll the sleeves up for a different look. Wear the Flight Centre belt over the blazer to create some shape and adding jewelry is always fun.  I added mint and turquoise pieces to perk up all of the navy.

Lace tights are on the risque side so feel free to wear regular tights in neutrals, black, navy, grey etc.  For fall and winter, opaque ones are modern and keep you Flighties in the northern hemisphere warm.

The Verdict:
Yvonne @ Corporate Traveller:  I'm sure I'm the LEAST creative person at my company when it comes to my uniform.  I wear the pieces as they come, straight from the bag, rarely adding embellishments like jewelry so being styled for CMB was really fun.  You opened up my mind and took me out of my comfort zone, like whoa, patterned tights!

I've complained in the past about having to wear a uniform but bottom line is I actually love not thinking about I'm going to wear every day, out our uniforms can still look great and the fact that I don't have to dedicate any of my fashion budget for work clothes? Awesome :)

Joanna from CMB: It was fun styling the Flight Centre uniform and trying to put together outfits that were outside the box.

Flighties, feel free to leave a comment and share your own stylish uniform ideas!

For all my regular readers, if you want the ease of a uniform, create your own "uniform" by purchasing basic neutral pieces and using the same tips!

Spice It Up Summary:
Jewelry
Fun manicures (just don't let your nails get chipped)
Belts
Scarves
Roll up the sleeves
Layer pieces

CMB Spotlight: Cheryl

Meet Cheryl, a fellow business women who is not only successful but also extremely stylish and professional. Cheryl graciously let me snoop in her closet to pick out a work outfit that she would typically wear to the office. I knew from past sightings that Cheryl knows how to rock a business dress so I was especially excited when I saw this little Rachel Roy number. I added a black blazer, black pumps and with a little bit of convincing, a grey belt over top (all courtesy of Cheryl's closet).

Cheryl also agreed to answer a few questions about her work style. Enjoy!

What is your office dress code? We don't have an official dress code at our office, but most women wear suits every day except for Friday when a cardigan or a non-matching blazer are okay.

What does your typical office outfit look like? Typically, I wear what I like to call my uniform: a dark coloured Theory suit with a collared blouse in white or blue, and Nine West pumps.

What are some limitations of this dress code to you? While sometimes it's nice to not have to think about what to wear in the mornings, it's really hard to transition from work to after-work activities. Also, I don't really get to participate in cute trends or feel very feminine.

What is your favorite piece in your office wardrobe? My favorite piece is my leopard print belt. Although you can't see it if I button my jacket, it makes me feel I haven't given up on fashion entirely!

What do you think is one rule that women in business should always adhere to? Always be prepared! The Girl Guides were right. Dress in a manner where you wouldn't be uncomfortable if you had to attend a surprise meeting with the bigwigs. If that means keeping a jacket in your office to throw on in emergencies, do it.

What is one office fashion faux pas that you have done in your past that you wish you could take back? There are so many to choose from, but one particularly bad one I committed regularly was hemming pants to wear with heels and then wearing flats with them. It looks sloppy and ruins the bottom of your
pants.

Any other advice/comments for women out there in business? I received this advice from a friend and found it to be very true. Invest in at least one great suit and have it altered to fit your proportions. Inevitably, you will have to wear it at an important moment in your career and you'll want to look and feel your best.
